The European Commission (EC) has decided to lift the 'yellow card' for Solomon Islands, recognising the significant progress the country has made in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services says that it is preparing for a possible spike in waterborne diseases, this after week of heavy rain and flooding in Honiara and parts of the Solomon Islands.

Heavy rain has left hundreds without shelter, with the worst affected forced to seek temporary shelter at school halls, others with friends and relatives.

The Solomon Islands government is pushing for the controversial gold ridge mine to reopen, ABC Radio Australia reported.

WHO and UNICEF are partnering with local civil society and the provincial government to deliver health and education supplies to those affected by the 7.8 magnitude December earthquake in Makira province.
