General Manager of the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, Michael Tokuru, has welcomed the recent announcement of an agreement with the Australia to increase flights between the two countries.
Mr Tokuru says while he has not seen the agreement, he says the move should see an increase in tourism activities in Solomon Islands. He says the direct flights to Honiara from some of Australia's big cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth will be good for both countries.
While acknowledging the present government's intention to upgrade airfields in the country, Mr Tokuru says there is a need to fast track the upgrading of the Munda airfield to cater for bigger aircraft and direct flights from overseas.
He says the increased flights to Solomon Islands should make it more convenient and affordable for tourists. "This would mean more tourists coming into the country which will benefit Solomon Islanders who are involved in the tourism industry," Mr Tokuru said.
