The University of the South Pacific has outlined pandemic plans to inform students and staff on preventative measures against the contraction of the A(H1N1) virus and has identified an isolation area for those infected or suspected of being infected.
This is according to an article by Fiji Times Online. According to the report, the assigned team will issue "weekly emails university-wide to all staff and students on preventative measures; updated from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Fiji's Ministry of Health, circulating Ministry of Health information packages (brochures, posters etc.)" on USP's 14 campuses in the 12-member countries.However, the public is being urged not to panic but simply take precautionary measures. In a number of letters written to Solomon Times Online, some students reported that life in Suva, where USP's largest campus is located, is business as usual and that family and friends back home should not worry.
The 8 new confirmed cases of swine flu, of which 5 are from Suva, increased the total number of infected persons in Fiji to 19. Of the 19 cases, 6 are children below the age of 7.
