TRC Begins Awareness Workshop

About 80 church, women, youth and traditional leaders from all over Guadalcanal province are attending a three day workshop on the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC.

Deputy executive secretary of TRC, David Tuhanuku, says the workshop aims to educate participants on some aspects of the TRC Act, the aims and objectives of the commission and how it will help Solomon Islands and those affected by the ethnic tension.

Mr Tuhanuku says at the end of the workshop, the commission will ask for nominations of individuals who will be in the TRC provincial teams in Guadalcanal.

He says the TRC has divided Guadalcanal into five zones and each zone will have a team to help the commission to plan its awareness program.

He says the provincial teams will help explain the role of the commission to the people and to use stories they collected from the people to convince them to reconcile.

He says a similar workshop will be held in Malaita province and to other areas of the country.

The TRC plans to start the actual inquiry in October.
