Students in PNG Still Waiting for Allowance

More than 20 students studying at the University of Papua New Guinea in Waigani are still waiting for the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea to release their allowances.

The students have been in PNG since 23rd February.

High Commissioner Bernard Bata'anisia is still in the country after accompanying a team of PNG investors.

The team left early last week but the Commissioner is still in the country leaving the students stranded without any money to buy their school materials.

Speaking to SIBC news, the President of Solomon Islands Students studying at UPNG confirmed that only High Commissioner Bata'anisia has the authority to release their allowances.

He says that he is unsure as to the date of the return of the High Commissioner as he had conveyed to him that he will be on leave in Solomon Islands after the trade and investment mission.

Malcolm Row says while the students wait, responsible authorities needs to take action immediately as the students are now in their third week of schooling.

He also calls on the education authorities to post a representative in Papua New Guinea to deal with student allowances rather than the High Commission to PNG.
