Police Commissioner Jahir Khan has issued a statement to explain the status of his two year contract to serve as head of the Solomon Islands Police Force.
Mr. Khan made the clarification following media reports that the government had forced him to resign effective June this year.He explained that his contract will now lapse at the end of May 2008, following his advice to the prime minister to review his initial contract with the Solomon Islands government from two years to a one year term.
Mr. Khan said he agreed to government's decision on the matter and appreciates government's interest in allowing him to complete some on-going programs in the Police Force.
He said these programs are focusing on developing community policing in the country and ensuring that Solomon Islands' police officers are given the opportunity to benefit from the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.
Mr. Khan said his contract review coincides with an international commitment he has in the United States from June 2008.
He said as much as he would want to stay further to help Solomon Islands, he also needs to attend to this personal commitment.
Mr. Khan said he regrets the negative media coverage of this issue, but says like all leaders he stands to be judged and believes in truth and genuine media reporting.
He said he will continue to serve the government and people of Solomon Islands to the best of his ability until his contract comes to an end.
