The Solomon Islands High Commission Office in Suva, Fiji has publicly acknowledged the support received from Organizations and Individuals in Fiji together with the Solomon Islands Community in Suva for their response to a flood appeal launched in Suva last month.
A statement from the Suva Mission said the High Commission wishes to express its deepest and sincere gratitude to those that have lend their support towards victims of the April 3 flooding which killed precious lives and damage property.
Communities affected by the disaster are still recovering from the destruction.
“The assistance that has been rendered is a much needed support towards helping those affected to start over and have the esteem to rebuild in light of all the destruction faced as well as the rehabilitation process that the government is currently undertaking,” said High Commissioner Patterson Oti.
Donated items collected during the appeal have already been packed and shipped to Honiara for onward distribution to victims by the Solomon Islands Red Cross.
“May we on behalf of the Government and People of Solomon Islands convey our sincere appreciation to all of you,” Mr Oti said.
Meanwhile, the High Commission Office together with SI student associations in Suva has organized a second fundraising program with the aid of popular Solomon Islands Music group-DPM.
The youth band has been scheduled to put on a series of live performances in Suva from May 28th-30th.
Mr Oti said proceeds from the fundraising effort will be donated to any identified charitable organisation in Fiji to acknowledge the support that the people of Fiji have rendered to Solomon Islands during its difficult moment. Part of the proceeds will also be donated towards the ongoing recovery efforts in Solomon Islands.
High Commissioner Oti will accompany the band from Honiara to Fiji on May 24th ahead of the planned fundraising activities.
