There has been a noted increase in fatal road accidents since last month.
In a random public interview, most state that police are to blame for not helping to curb the rise."Police need to be really firm with drivers," Elliot Joe from Malaita Province said.
He said that strict penalties will definitely cause drivers to be more careful when behind the wheels.
"If police can step up on their penalties, especially with drink driving, it will make drivers to be more concerned and careful," he said.
Most agreed that tough penalties on careless driving should be imposed to make drivers more alert when on the road.
The recent high toll has created fear on the public to be out and about with Christmas just around the corner.
Meanwhile, Kukum Traffic Superintendent, Albert Samani said police are doing their best to educate drivers.
"Last week, there has been high visible duty around the city with police checking for faulty vehicles and drink drivers," he told Solomon Times.
Supt. Samani said that while police are doing their best in maintaining road safety for the public, "drivers need to be responsible when behind the wheels".
On tough penalties, the Kukum Traffic head said that police are working on increasing fines for charges on driving under the influence of liquor.
"We are planning on increasing fines," Supt. Samani said, adding that police are now charging drink drivers on the spot.
Solomon Times was informed that for November, there has been a total of 18 accidents while 11 accidents, so far, recorded for December "both minor and serious".
Supt. Samani called on the public to work together with police and help make the festive season a safe one for road users.
