Police Plan to Ban Sale of Alcohol on Election Day

Police say they are planning to ban the sale of alcohol in the country during the National General Elections on August 4.

Deputy Police Commissioner Walter Kola announced this in last week's news conference at the Rove Police Headquarters in Honiara.

Mr Kola said this is to prevent any "anti-social behaviour or disturbances that drunken people can cause during the elections."

He said police are planning to impose the ban for two days, beginning on the 3rd to the 4th of August, which is Election Day.

He said they are awaiting approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the matter.

Mr Kola said liquor outlets will be informed as soon as approval is given, and those who do not comply will be dealt with accordingly.

The Police are taking a proactive stance on the issue given past experiences where alcohol was an unwanted catalyst for social problems after elections.
