Police are now on 'Operation High Visibility' to ensure a safe Christmas and New Year for Honiara residents.
Provincial Police Commander for Honiara, Nathan Ratu, said the operation, which started Monday, is in alignment with the Safe Boat police operation.He said the operation safe boat will ensure that boats are not overloaded for the safety of traveling passengers.
Mr. Ratu said that what the RSIP are trying to get at is the safety of the people of Solomon Islands for this season.
He said that police will also closely monitor and deal with traffic and alcohol.
Mr. Ratu warned that police have adopted a zero tolerance approach to alcohol-related offences.
He said two innocent young lives were lost in what has been described as a "horrific accident" despite police advise issued against drink driving.
The teenage boy was a Form three student at King George the Sixth School and the girl was a Form two student at the Bishop Epalle High School.
Both teenagers died from severe head and body injuries sustained from the accident.
"Operation High Visibility will deal heavily with drivers under the influence of liquor and also crack down on illegal selling of the home-made brewery, kwaso," he said.
Mr. Ratu added that the operation will also take up the responsibility of making sure clubs are closed at 2am.
He calls on the public to work together with police for a safer environment for everyone to enjoy good celebrations.
