Opposition Leader Boycott "Nonsense"

Declaration by the Opposition Leader to boycott government functions has been described as "nonsense".

Solomon Islands Deputy Prime Minister, Fred Fono made the comment in response to Mr. Sogavare's recent declaration that he will boycott state functions until the Dr. Derek Sikua government gives him a good explanation on why his government was ousted last December.

But Mr. Fono said that former Ministers and backbenchers of the Grand Coalition for Change Government (GCCG) had explained that their reason for leaving his government was because they were not happy with Mr. Sogavare's style of leadership.

The Deputy Prime Minister also questioned why Mr. Sogavare could not be satisfied with the defections.

"Mr. Sogavare was ousted as Prime Minister in the democratic process through a vote of no confidence in his leadership in Parliament," Mr. Fono said.

He said the former Prime Minister's reason for boycotting a state function hosted by Prime Minister Sikua for the visiting Taiwanese Vice President Annette Lu on February 1st as "not only nonsense but ... also childish".

"... Taiwanese's overwhelming assistance both in funds and technical cooperation to Solomon Islands should have been the determining consideration for attending," Mr. Fono said.
