Moti Appointed first Professor of Law in Fiji

The University of Fiji has appointed former Solomon Islands Attorney General Julian Moti as its first Professor of Law.

A dual citizen of Fiji and Australia, Professor Moti is a graduate of both the University of Sydney and the Australian National University and has taught and practiced law in several countries.

He has also published extensively on areas such as constitutional law and international law. Professor Moti was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 2003; became Attorney General of Solomon Islands in 2006; and was awarded the Cross of Solomon Islands in 2001.

He was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Bond University in Australia (1992 –2006), a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India (2004 – 2006) and a Visiting Professor at Gujarat National Law University in Gandhinagar (2005 – 2006). UniFiji Law School’s Acting Dean, Salvin Nand said Professor Moti’s appointment is “welcomed and exciting news for the faculty and the planned expansion of our postgraduate law degree programme.”

“We will be relying on his leadership, expertise and experience to establish and develop the Master of Laws courses being offered from 2014 at the Suva and Saweni campuses.”

Professor Moti will be delivering the inaugural Sir Moti Tikaram Memorial Lecture at the Suva campus on Wednesday, November 6 at 5pm. The title of the public lecture is: “Making Our Constitution Our Own: A Genealogy of Fijian Constituent Power.”
