More Arrests Expected in Gizo Unrest

Police say more arrests will follow after an outbreak of violence in the town of Gizo.

13 people were arrested on Friday night for unlawful assembly and disorder after several shops were damaged and looted.

Police Commissioner John Lansley says the incident is a continuation of a dispute between two groups the week before, which led to the stabbing of two people, including a police officer.

"We are actually anticipating a number of further arrests, probably about eight more. And the investigation into the incident and the previous incident is also continuing."

The Police Commissioner says there's a heavy police presence still in Gizo and the surrounds, both in ensuring the situation is under control, which it is, and also in progressing the investigations and ensuring that people are brought to justice.

John Lansley says police are now facilitating a reconciliation meeting between the two groups.
