The constant power cuts experienced in the capital Honiara may well be a thing of the past thanks to a power supply project funded by the Japanese government.
The completion of the Honiara Power Supply Improvement Project was marked by a dinner function, held at the police club last week.Speaking during the occasion, the Charge d Affairs of the Japanese embassy, Mr. Akira Iwanade, said that it is important for Honiara to have stable power supply as it is very important for any major economic development. "This also shows the strong diplomatic relations, cultivated over a long journey, between Japan and the Solomon Islands government."
Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. Edward Huniehu, also spoke during the occasion. "Such an infrastructure, within the energy sector, will meet the rising demand for power in Honiara city" said Mr Huniehu.
"It has been a national objective of the CNURA government to rehabilitate damaged social and economic infrastructure to stimulate economic growth."
Families, particularly in western parts of Honiara, are excited with the prospects of having consistent power supply. "Honiara has to be one of the very few places in the World where we have candle lit dinner not for romantic reasons but because of power failure" remarked one resident.
