Business Owner Calls for Support from Women

A Solomon Islands local timber business owner is calling on all women to support other women running for parliament as the country gears up for the 2014 election.

Nanette Tutua says she is the only woman in the country running her own timber company but the number of women running their own business is steadily growing.

She says there are more than enough women to vote women into parliament, which she says would be good for the country because women are less corrupt than men.

But Ms Tutua says at election time women are bribed to vote for men.

“That’s what you have to understand about our culture, a hundred dollars is a little of money. You give it to this person, he’ll definitely vote for you. The men come and say, ’Hey, hey, wife, wife, see, see, come, let’s vote for this guy - here, here, hundred dollars for you -’ so the women vote for that guy.”

Nanette Tutua says if women truly support women they will get into parliament.
