Australian Girls Looks Forward to Solomon Visit

Students of Strathcona Baptist Girls' Grammar School in Australia have collected thousands of coloured pencils to donate to children at Florence Young Christian School and Gwauaoa Village Primary School in the Solomon Islands.

Solomon Islands customs officers may be in for a surprise next month if they ask to inspect the luggage of one Canterbury school group.

Strathcona Baptist Girls' Grammar School students have collected thousands of coloured pencils to donate to children at Florence Young Christian School and Gwauaoa Village Primary School in the Solomon Islands.

On September 12, a group of 14 Year 11 and 12 students, and three staff, will embark on an adventure to deliver their donated goods in person.

Year 8 student Olivia helped to organise the project as part of The Duke of Edinburgh Award and was overwhelmed by the school's response.

"Our goal was to get 750 or more, but we've received thousands," Olivia said.

Deputy principal Jenni Farmilo said Strathcona hoped to build a long-term friendship with schools in the Solomon Islands and visit every two years.

Students will experience village life on their eight-day trip, including sleeping under mosquito nets, she said.

"I'm offering professional development to the teachers and the girls are teaching craft activities, playing sport, games and reading with the children," Ms Farmilo said.

Year 11 student Lauren was inspired by her sister's volunteer work overseas and did not know what to expect from the trip.

"It will be a good experience to see what it's like over there," she said.
