Thirteen people have been arrested in Gizo after police reinforcements were sent to deal with civil disturbances between two groups over the weekend.

Earlier last week, Police in Gizo arrested a suspect for the stabbing of multiple victims. As a result of this incident, tensions have remained high between the respective parties.

Late Friday night a group of men attacked the Gizo Police Station and caused damage to the nearby market area. The group reconvened early on Saturday morning where a further disturbance broke out.

The Police Response Team, with the assistance of the RAMSI Participating Police Force, was deployed to Gizo to assist the local Police in restoring security within the area.

Police subsequently arrested eight members allegedly involved in the disturbance.

Deputy Police Commissioner Walter Kola commended the officers involved in the operation for their quick response which resulted in the arrest of individuals allegedly involved in the disturbance.

The suspects have been charged with various offences in relation to the disturbances and are expected to appear in the Magistrate's court on a later date.

The investigation into the original stabbing and this weekend's disturbance is continuing.
